RK Arena 2009 Winter Series Team Sorting
2009 - January 3rd, 17th and 31st; February 14th, and 28th; March 14th and Winter Series Finals Held March 28th and 29th.
All Events are held on Saturdays at 2:00 PM, if weather prevents us from running on a Saturday; we'll run the event on Sunday if weather allows. If we can't get our event underway on a particular weekend due to weather or unforseen reasons, we'll re-schedule for the following weekend.
Note: It is always best to give us a call or email us and let us know if you are planning on riding and how many riders are coming with you. If the weather for any given event is looking bad or very questionable, then please give us a call to confirm if the sorting is on as scheduled, or is being rescheduled to another date.

All rider experience levels are welcome.
-
Three (3) person Team Sorting; cattle are corriente roping steers, healthy, and perfect for sorting. We run generally two pens of 8, with one trash cow; and if we have to based on the turn out and number of runs, we'll run a third pen. Our cattle are tough to sort (which makes it fun) and they hold up very well. No complaints from any riders yet, other than they are tricky to sort.
-
Classes: Practice ($5 per rider), Novice ($10 per rider) and Jackpot ($20 per rider); you can run as many runs as you like and with the same riders/horses.
-
Winter Series Events all riders in Novice and Jackpot compete for series points and receive paybacks for winning teams.
-
Points: Awarded to Novice and Jackpot teams. Teams which complete a qualified run earn points; 10 points for 1st, 9 points for 2nd, & down to 1 point for 10th position. All points are accurately tracked and recorded and posted. Additionally every run that a rider completes (with time or no time) is also tracked, & recorded, so each ride completed is automatically entered into the race for the series end trophy saddle for the rider that ran the most runs during the series. Note: The Winter Series Final Events on March 28th & 29th earns each rider 1.5X points - so be sure not to miss that weekend if you're in the chase for any of the trophy prizes.
-
Payouts: Paybacks for novice class: Total purse is 30%; with 15% to 1st, 10% to 2nd, and 5% to 3rd place team. Payback in the Jackpot class: 50% of the total purse; pays two places 1st, and 2nd for less than 14 teams/runs - 1st pays 50% less teams entry fees; 2nd place pays entry fee. When there are 15 or more teams/runs; we payout three places; 1st = 50% of total purse less the teams entry fee times 60% of payout purse; 2nd place pays 40% of total purse, and 3rd place receives their entry fee back.
-
Trophy Prizes: Award to Novice and Jackpot Champion and Reserve Champions; (1) Novice Champion & (1) Novice Reserve Champion each rider receives a custom breast collar; (1) Jackpot Champion & Jackpot Reserve Champion each rider receives a custom breast collar; and (1) Hardest Working Cowboy Champion (rider that ran the most runs during the series) receives a custom handmade saddle (a nice working cow horse saddle by the way!).

The RK Arena Team:
This is the core team (not everyone) that donates a lot of their time and energy to make the sortings happen. With out these folks we couldn't put these deals on - everyone in the group is just a great bunch of wonderful people, Kitty and I are fortunate to have them all as friends.
First row is Debbie (Marty's better half, and our medical advisor), Claudia (my sister from Michigan), my wife Kitty (I am a very lucky man), and Donna Nott (aka Martha Stewart - she is amazing in the kitchen), and Cody Lensman (a good hand around the barn - and terrific roper). Kitty handles a lot of the registration duties, run the timers, and most importantly prepare the good food we all enjoy - so please be sure to give them your food donations!
Second, second person in the row is Lawrence Nott, Marty Carnes, our PA announcer and resident mayor of St. Paris, it seems that everyone in St. Paris knows him, he is a great person and unfortunately suffered a heart attack recently and has not been able ride of late but he'll be back in the saddle soon, Connie the flaggers wife, who is really super helpful in the office keeping things running smoothly and always smiling and willing to do whatever needs done, and of course, there is Ms. Santa (aka Wendy who also rides but we haven't got her to sort with us just yet), Vickie who is always happy, cheerful and ready to chip in (except when the OSU Bucks are playing-lol), and our cousins Kenny &, Mindy Lensman (Cody's parents), Damon (the FFA supporter and a good rodeo guy) Cody's rodeo bud, and the guy in the back row with the black beanie hat is our gate/centerline flagger "Adrian" (Connie is his wife btw), he is a 3rd degree black belt, ex-navy seal, government security cop, and an extreme UFC fighter (LOL), so his call on the foul line/gate shouldn't be challenged in an un-sportsmanship manner, approach respectfully (LOL), the good news is he is a really nice guy and it is not easy to ruffle his feathers. We all think that Adrian has the worst job in barn, always sitting in the cold for hours, watching every run and every cow that rolls through the pen, and having to call "No Time" - a thankless job, that doesn't pay too well - thanks Adrian - we appreciate your help. And finally Darin Hess, a darn good Ferrier and nice guy - anybody that needs a shoe pulled, a reset, or a trim while your horses are at the sorting - reach out to Darin, he'll fix you up.
There is no question that all of these folks would rather be sorting, riding, or doing other things on their weekends, but they donate their time and money to help make the RK Arena Sortings fun for everyone. Hey without these folks, we simply couldn't hold the sorting events - so we sincerely appreciate all their help.
