Ranch Sorting Spring 2009

Schedule of Events for Spring:

Dates: April 4th & 25th, May 9th & 30th, and the Spring Series Team Sorting Finals (everyone is welcome to ride, not just the riders that competed during the spring series, etc) held June 6th & 7th - current plan is to hold the finals in the outdoor arena - weather permitting (LOL).

Times: All Events are held on Saturday's at 1:00 PM, except the Spring Finals which are held on Saturday, June 6th @ 1:00 PM AND Sunday, June 7th @ 11 AM.

Call-In RSVP: We can hold up to 50 horses safely in the indoor arena (we can accomodate 150 or so riders in the outdoor arena) at any one time. Riders are encouraged to CALL-IN or Email us to confirm your attendance 24 hrs before the event date. This ensures that all riders that RSVP have a spot in the indoor arena. In the case we have more than 50 riders show up, and those riders that did not confirm in advance, will have to wait outside the indoor for their runs. Email us at Rob.Lensman@Gmail.com or call 937.244.4496 to confirm your attendance.

  • All rider experience levels are welcome from Beginner, Novice, Open, Pro, young or old, everyone is welcome at our pen.
  • Classes: Practice, Novice, Open and Jackpot.
  • 2-Rider Teams, 3-Rider Teams and 1-Rider Cowboy Sorting Challenge.
  • Order of Classes: 3-Rider Open, Practice (2 & 3-Rider Teams), 2-Rider Open, 3-Rider Novice, 3-Rider Jackpot, & the 1-Rider Cowboy Jackpot Challenge.
  • RK Arena Rider Classification: We're not a sanctioned USTPA venue, however we do attempt to classify our riders into 2 levels of experience. We do this to keep the beginning team sorters in the Novice class to give them a fair shot are winning and improving upon their sorting skills with like riders. At RK Arena, a Novice Rider is a beginner rider with reasonable horsemanship skills, & has not had much or any experience in Team Sorting, Team Penning, or any other cattle events such as cutting, roping, or other cattle working type events. The Novice rider has not earned more than $200 in total winnings over the last 2-years or did not consistently place (with qualified times) in any cattle related events, but the rider may have earned more than $200 in winnings in other non-cattle related events such as barrel racing, poles, or other speed/control events. An Open Rider is an experienced rider with solid horsemanship skills & has competed at local, state, or national sorting, penning or other cattle related events. The Open Rider has won more than $200 in total winnings over the last 2 years and consistently placed with qualified times, and may not have actually received payback money.
  • Entry Fees Per Class; Practice ($5 per rider), Novice ($10 per rider), Open ($15 per rider), Jackpot ($20 per rider); you can run as many runs as you like and with the same riders/horses in any class.
  • Payouts: (see attachment below for complete details). Novice 30%, Open 40%, Jackpot 50%, & 1-Rider Challenge 60%.
  • Spring Series Events all riders in Novice, Open, and Jackpot compete for series points and receive paybacks for winning teams.
  • Points: Awarded to Novice, Open and Jackpot teams. Teams which complete a qualified run earn points; 10 points for 1st, 9 points for 2nd, & down to 1 point for 10th position. All points are accurately tracked and recorded and posted.
  • Cattle are corriente roping steers, healthy, they stay strong, and are perfect for team sorting. We run generally two pens of 8 (we may run 10 head per pen during the spring), with one trash cow; and if we have to based on the turn out and number of runs, we'll run a third pen. Our cattle are tough to sort (which makes it fun) and they hold up very well. No complaints from any riders yet, other than they are tricky to sort.
  • Trophy Prizes: Awarded to Novice, Open and Jackpot Champion and Reserve Champions.
  • Indoor Arena 72' x 120', great footing and lighting.
  • Plenty of Trailer Parking available; a few sites have electric and water hook up for overnight.
  • Heated Office and Viewing Room; with great home cook food available for all (donations appreciated).
  • We try to limit the number of riders per event to around 50 riders; anymore riders in the arena it tends to get a little tight. Call or email us to reserve your spot at each event. 937.244.4496 or (ask for Rob) or email at  rob.lensman@gmail.com
  • We rent the cattle and arena to our riders that want to practice or tune up their skills, or their horses during the week and off event weekends. Pricing is generally around $30 per rider per hour with a minimum of $100; depending on how riders attend and for how long they need the arena and cows, price may be less, it just depends on the number of riders that are coming, etc. Call or email us to discuss specifics and details. 937.244.4496 (ask for Rob) or rob.lensman@gmail.com
